STATEMENT: Ninth Anniversary of the Attack at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill
Statement by the Prime Minister marking nine years since the attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement marking nine years since the attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill:
“Nine years ago today, a terrorist attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, claimed one life and injured several others, inflicting a deep wound on our country, on all Canadians, and on the values we hold dear.
“On this day, I join Canadians across the country in honouring Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a sentry guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was killed two days earlier in a separate attack in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. We remember them as brave members of the Canadian Armed Forces who devoted themselves to their country, and we offer our deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and colleagues.
“On this sombre anniversary, we also pay tribute to the first responders who risked their lives to respond to these attacks and help keep Canadians safe, as well as the bystanders who acted quickly and selflessly in the face of danger to help the victims.
“There is no place for hate or violence in Canada, and the attacks that took place nine years ago are a stark reminder that Canadians only grow closer and more united when responding to tragedy. Together, let us continue to counter hate by promoting the values of freedom, peace, and inclusion that make our country stronger.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage Canadians to take a moment today to mourn the two brave soldiers we lost and to thank our brave service members, who dedicate each day to making Canada the country we know and love.”

Le premier ministre Justin Trudeau a fait aujourd'hui la déclaration suivante pour souligner les neuf années écoulées depuis l’attentat survenu au Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada et sur la Colline du Parlement :
« Il y a neuf ans aujourd'hui, un attentat terroriste perpétré à Ottawa, au Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada et sur la Colline du Parlement, a coûté la vie à une personne et en a blessé plusieurs autres, infligeant une profonde blessure à notre pays, à tous les Canadiens et aux valeurs qui nous sont chères.
« Aujourd'hui, je me joins aux Canadiens de partout au pays pour rendre hommage au caporal Nathan Cirillo, une sentinelle qui gardait la Tombe du Soldat inconnu, ainsi qu’à l’adjudant Patrice Vincent, qui a été tué deux jours plus tôt lors d’un autre attentat survenu à Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, au Québec. Nous gardons d’eux le souvenir de courageux membres des Forces armées canadiennes qui ont consacré leur vie au service de leur pays. Nous offrons nos plus sincères condoléances à leur famille, à leurs proches et à leurs collègues.
« En ce sombre anniversaire, nous rendons également hommage aux premiers intervenants qui ont risqué leur vie afin de réagir à ces attentats et d’assurer la sécurité des Canadiens, ainsi qu’aux témoins qui ont agi rapidement en faisant fi du danger pour venir en aide aux victimes.
« La haine et la violence n’ont pas leur place au Canada, et les attentats perpétrés il y a neuf ans nous rappellent avec éloquence que face à la tragédie, les Canadiens se rapprochent et s’unissent. Ensemble, continuons de lutter contre la haine en prônant les valeurs de liberté, de paix et d’inclusion qui rendent notre pays plus fort.
« Au nom du gouvernement du Canada, j’encourage les Canadiens à prendre un moment aujourd'hui pour pleurer la perte des deux valeureux soldats qui nous ont quittés et pour remercier nos courageux militaires, qui s’emploient chaque jour à faire du Canada le pays que nous connaissons et aimons. »
