Iran Statement

As many continue to gather in solidarity with the people of Iran, I want to share a message of support for those who continue to peacefully stand up for freedom, dignity, and fundamental human rights.

Canada strongly condemns the continued killings of protesters in Iran. The reports of violence, lethal force, arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and repression by Iranian authorities are deeply distressing and profoundly troubling. Peaceful demonstrators have shown extraordinary courage in standing up for their fundamental rights, and the use of force against civilians who are exercising their right to peaceful protest must be unequivocally condemned.

The Iranian regime must halt its horrific repression and intimidation and respect the human rights of its citizens. Iranian authorities have a responsibility to protect their own people and to uphold freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal.

Canada has been clear in its response. Alongside our partners in Australia and the European Union, our Foreign Ministers issued a joint statement condemning the killing of peaceful protesters, denouncing violence and repression by Iranian security forces, calling on Iran to immediately end the use of excessive and lethal force, and emphasizing that Iranian authorities have a responsibility to protect their own citizens and uphold freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has also spoken directly to the situation, condemning the killing of protesters and urging Iranian authorities to respect the rights of peaceful demonstrators and allow freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal.

Canada continues to implement measures to hold Iran accountable for its support of terrorism, human rights violations, and destabilizing activities. This includes Canadian sanctions on 215 Iranian individuals and 256 Iranian entities for peace and security violations, human rights abuses, and terrorism support. Canada will continue to hold Iran to account.

In June 2024, Canada listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization under the Criminal Code. Canada has also listed Hamas, Hizballah, and the Houthis as terrorist organizations, and continues to work with international partners, including through proceedings at the International Civil Aviation Organization related to the downing of flight PS752, to hold Iran accountable under international law.

Please know that I am committed to standing up for human rights and the rule of law around the world, and I will continue to support efforts that amplify the voices of those calling for freedom, dignity, and justice. Your message matters. It helps ensure that the government remains focused on these urgent human rights concerns and upholds Canada’s values on the world stage.

My thoughts remain with the people of Iran, and with all those courageously striving for a future where their rights are fully respected and protected.

Sincerely,
Jenna
