New Grocery Essentials Benefit
This morning I was proud to join our Prime Minister when he announced new measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians. I wanted to ensure I shared these details with our community as there are many in our community who will receive this new benefit.
Central to the plan is the introduction of the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which increases the current GST credit by 25% over the next five years and includes a one-time 50% top-up this year, bringing significant additional support to more than 12 million Canadians, including families and individuals.
Many Canadians have been feeling the pressure of rising costs, and our government is focused on delivering support where it’s needed most.
We're also committing $500 million through the Strategic Response Fund to help Canadian businesses manage rising costs. By putting a renewed focus on competition in the food supply chain, we are taking decisive action to bring down grocery prices.
Strengthening supply chains and restoring real competition means more fairness at the checkout and real relief for Canadian families. Stay tuned for new per unit pricing on packages soon as well - ensuring you can identify highest value in your purchases.
We’re building Canada strong, because we’re strongest when we look after each other and when we ensure everyone has the chance to get ahead.
Sincerely,
Jenna
