Join the Semiconductor Innovation Challenge

Did you know? Semiconductors are crucial for many products used by Canadians in their daily lives, from the computers we use to the cars we drive. Their supply has an impact on all sectors of the economy.

For the past year, the COVID pandemic-induced shortage of semiconductor chips has rocked global supply chains, affecting the production of cars, game consoles, home appliances and more. As a global leader in technology, Canada has a leading role to play in accelerating the production of semiconductors to meet demand.

That’s why yesterday, Minister Champagne has announced The Semiconductor Innovation Challenge – the allocation of $150 million through the Strategic Innovation Fund, to make targeted investments to enhance Canada’s domestic strengths associated with the development and supply of semiconductors.

Minister Champagne also announced a $90-million investment to update the  Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC), a facility which is a key asset in solidifying our role as a world leader in photonics and next-generation semiconductor photonic devices.

As technologies advance , Canada’s semiconductor needs will continue to grow. That’s why we need to embrace big and bold approaches to build Canadian capability and secure our supply needs.
