Trade War Update - February 4

A lot has transpired since I shared my trade war update yesterday morning. By now, you’ve likely heard that proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days for both Canada and the US while we work together. We can all breathe a sigh of relief – but we shouldn’t let our guard down.

As announced mid-December, we’re implementing a robust $1.3 billion plan to strengthen the border with new helicopters, technology, personnel and enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.

We’re also appointing a Fentanyl Czar. We will list cartels as terrorists, ensure eyes are on the border 24/7, and launch a Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. The Prime Minister has also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million to get it off the ground.

Indeed, the pause on tariffs is welcome news. But in a more volatile world, Team Canada needs to be laser focused on growing the economy, increasing productivity and diversifying our export markets. There’s also tremendous opportunity to increase internal trade and we’ve seen a willingness from Premiers to make this happen.

In the last 24 hours I’ve been encouraged to hear the many ways you’re avoiding American products and expressing your Canadian pride. And even though tariffs are paused for now, I’d still encourage you to support Canadian made products and businesses wherever possible.

On that note, National Flag of Canada Day is on February 15th. It’ll mark 60 years since Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill. Take some time to celebrate the things that bring us together and fly your flag with great pride.

Proudly Canadian,

Jenna
