Vyshyvanka Day
Jenna Sudds, Member of Parliament for Kanata—Carleton, today issued the following statement on the celebration of Vyshyvanka Day:
“Today, May 19th, is Vyshyvanka Day, an eminent symbol of Ukrainian culture and national identity.
It’s said that the geometric embroiderty of vyshyvanka gives the wearer strength, protection, and endless pride.
As Ukraine fights for its freedom—from the hereoes of Kharkiv to the brave defenders of Mariupol—wearing vyshyvanka unites us in pride and solidarity.
Democracies around the world know that the people of Ukraine, in fighting for their lives and their sovereignty, are fighting for us, too. They are fighting for democracy, and we stand with them.
Slava Ukraini.”
Started in 2006, Vyshyvanka Day is an international holiday which aims to preserve the original folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered Ukrainian clothes called vyshyvanka. It is celebrated every third Thursday of May.
