2022: Year In Review

Since taking office in October of 2021, I’ve been hard at work, advocating on your behalf and addressing the issues that matter most to you.

I’d like to share a progress report of how our federal government has supported our community, ranging from constituency services provided by my team, to federal funding for local businesses, to vital supports for Kanata—Carleton residents.

My first year of service, by the numbers:

  • $131,057,245.40+

in federal funding secured for investments, projects and businesses in Kanata—Carleton.

  • 240+ votes

on bills, motions, and legislation presented in the House of Commons.

  • 1,250+

Kanata—Carleton constituents helped with casework and federal services.

  • 5,152+

responses to constituents about policy positions and ongoing legislation.

  • 6 town halls

held to hear constituents’ thoughts—including legislation consultations and rural-specific roundtables.

  • 131

speeches and debates made in the House of Commons and Parliamentary committes.

Take a closer look at some of the local success stories, facts, and figures from our community:

  • 13,750+

Kanata—Carleton families supported by the Canada Child Benefit with an average benefit amount of $5,080/family.

  • $1,889,000+

invested to create 623 summer jobs for youth at over 100 Kanata—Carleton local businesses last summer.

  • $50,000,000+

invested in the Kanata North Technology Park to drive world-class Canadian innovation.

  • $1.5 million

invested municipally to expand Kanata and Carp’s pedestrian & cycling areas.

  • $50,000

for community projects that help seniors stay active and engaged in their neighbourhoods.

  • 8,380

Kanata—Carleton seniors 75+ supported by an additional 10% increase to their Old Age Security.

See how our federal investments are supporting our riding’s neighbourhoods and communities:

Our Parliament has been hard at work this past year.
Here are some recent highlights:

  • Signed a $10-a-day child care agreement with Ontario, the final province to join the National Early Learning and Child Care system, and cut child care fees by an average of 50% for families across Canada.

  • Doubled the GST Credit for six months to help over 24,000 Kanata—Carleton residents make ends meet while household costs are high.

  • Implemented the Canada Dental Benefit for children under 12, with support for low-income Canadians under 18, Canadians with disabilities, and seniors on the way.

  • Established a 1% underused housing tax on vacant, nonresident, non-Canadian-owned homes to free up homes for Canadians to live in.

  • Blocked the wholesale transfer of Shaw’s wireless licenses to Rogers, which would result in less telecom competition and higher cell phone plan prices for Canadians.

  • Permanently eliminated interest on federal student and apprenticeship loans — and paused repayment for graduates until they make at least $40,000/year.

  • Held Premiers to account to ensure federal healthcare funding is spent responsibly and with results.

  • Increased the Old Age Security Pension by 10% to provide important support for seniors over 75.

  • Strengthened the Canada Workers Benefit for low income and minimum wage workers.

  • Launched a study into grocery chain competition amidst rising grocery prices.

  • Attracted billions of dollars in new private investment from Honda Canada, General Motors Canada, and more to build electrical vehicle components in Canada.

  • Developed a new Indo-Pacific Strategy to counter China’s growing regional and economic influence.

  • Transformed Nokia’s Kanata North laboratory into a world-class hub for 5G development and innovation.

  • Pledged to create a national Canada Disability Benefit to supplement provincial disability supports.

In the House of Commons, we’ve been hard at work to fulfill our ambitious legislative agenda. As you may know, you can follow this work online at OurCommons.ca.
