Cutting childcare costs in half for Ottawa parents
It’s official! As of December 2022, Ottawa parents are paying an average of 50% less for their children’s childcare!
Across Ontario, childcare fees are being reduced as part of the federal government's national early learning and childcare plan, which will achieve $10-a-day childcare across Canada.
This is good news for parents. These fee reductions are putting more money back in families’ pockets:
How much are parents saving per year?
Currently, thanks to our 50% fee reductions, Ontario parents are saving an average of over $6,000 per child per year.
Once fees reach $10-a-day, Ontario parents will save an average of over $9,000 per child per year.
In fact, almost half of Canada's provinces and territories have either announced child care fee reductions or have already achieved an average cost of $10-a-day or less for licensed child care.
Each province and territory is working hard to reduce childcare fees down to $10-a-day or lower. Below outlines the progress of each province and territory so far, as of November 2022:
Why do we need childcare?
Access to high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive early learning and childcare is important for the future of children.
Childcare gives our children the best possible start in life, and enables parents to work, creating a solid economic foundation for families across the country well into the future.
Accessible childcare also promotes greater gender equality by allowing more parents, particularly mothers, to participate in the workforce and achieve greater economic security. It also improves and grows the female-dominated early childhood educator workforce.
Thanks in part to these investments in high-quality affordable childcare, women’s participation in Canada’s workforce is higher than it’s ever been!
