My Thoughts on the Prime Minister’s Resignation

By now, you’ve seen the news: Prime Minister Trudeau has announced his resignation.

It’s been a busy day of urgent meetings. But, I thought it was important to take a moment and answer your questions about what this means — for the country, and for us in Kanata-Carleton.

The past few weeks have brought some hard conversations. I’ve heard from neighbours. I’ve read thoughtful emails from you. I’ve had honest chats with my colleagues in Parliament. Some shared that they wanted the Prime Minister to continue leading, and others felt it was time for a new direction.

I can’t imagine stepping away was an easy decision for him. But when we look back, the Prime Minister leaves behind a strong record:

  • Child poverty reduced at historic rates.

  • $10-a-day child care, helping parents afford to return to work.

  • Restoring the age of retirement to 65 after the Conservatives raised it to 67.

  • Meaningful steps towards Indigenous reconciliation.

  • Fighting climate change and curbing carbon emissions to make our environment cleaner.

  • Guiding the country through the COVID-19 pandemic with calm and confidence.

  • Renegotiating NAFTA during the first Trump Administration — and standing firm against retaliatory tariffs.

For all of this, Canada is grateful for his service.

And through it all, he’s been a dad, too. I’m especially thinking about his three kids today — because they’ve shared their dad with the country for so many years.

Now, the Liberal Party will select its next leader. It’ll be a thorough, competitive process — but I’m hopeful it’ll bring fresh ideas to the table.

While this leadership process unfolds, I want you to know this: the work doesn’t stop. The government continues to serve. My office is open as always. I am here to serve you as your Member of Parliament.

My focus remains right here in Kanata-Carleton, where it belongs.

In the meantime, like always, I’d love to hear from you. If you have thoughts, questions, or just want to share what’s on your mind, reach out. Your emails and messages mean so much to me, and I’m honoured to get to do this work on your behalf.

Kind regards,

Jenna
