Newsletter - June 2026

School’s out! My sincere congratulations to all 2026 grads and a heartfelt thank you to the parents for their unwavering support and to the incredible teachers who have dedicated their lives to shaping this next generation. Dream big, stay curious, and go take on the world!

Happy Canada Day!

Tomorrow, get your red and white on and join me to celebrate Canada Day at Walter Baker Park at Canada Day in Kanata! A big thank you to all sponsors, volunteers, and contributors to make this event happen again.

It’s wonderful to see the Canada Day lawn signs popping up across our community! Thank you to everyone who joined in and helped spread a little extra Canadian spirit. If you missed out this year, I’m planning to do it all again next year.

Update from the House of Commons

As Parliament rises for the summer, I'm reflecting on a session focused on the issues that matter most to Canadians: making life more affordable, keeping our communities safe, and building a strong economy. In a time of global uncertainty, our government has been focused on supporting Canadian workers and businesses and creating the conditions for long-term prosperity.

While Parliament may be rising, the work continues. I look forward to spending more time in our communities of Kanata, Bells Corners, Stittsville, and Carp this summer, listening to residents and continuing to advocate for a safer, more affordable, and more prosperous future for everyone.

Safe Social Media Act

On June 10, our government introduced the Safe Social Media Act. It marks a significant step toward creating safer digital spaces for Canadians, particularly children and youth. For years, policymakers around the world have struggled with a fundamental question: how do we preserve the benefits of social media and emerging AI technologies while reducing the very real harms they can create?

Bill C-34 takes a "safety by design" approach, shifting the focus from reacting to harm after it occurs to requiring platforms to actively identify, assess, and mitigate risks before harm happens.

This legislation recognizes that digital safety is no longer just a content moderation issue - it is a platform design issue. The responsibility for creating safer online environments cannot rest solely with parents and users; it must also be shared by the companies building and operating these services.

The bill will undoubtedly generate important discussions about privacy, innovation, freedom of expression, and implementation. Those conversations are worth having. But I believe the broader objective is clear: ensuring that the digital spaces where Canadians learn, connect, and participate are safer for everyone.

AI for All

June 4 marked the launch of AI for All, Canada’s New Al Strategy. Canada is a global powerhouse in Al research, and the next phase of our leadership is about ensuring Canadian breakthroughs translate directly into Canadian economic value.

In our community — home to Canada’s largest tech park — we see the immense capability of our local tech ecosystem every day. This strategy is designed to scale that existing strength, moving our nation from world-class-Al invention to massive domestic Al impact. What this means for Canadians:

  • Creates 250,000 new high-quality jobs over five years, including 90,000 targeted roles for youth.

  • Drives a $200 billion GDP boost by increasing business Al adoption to over 60%.

  • Integrates Al into local businesses and healthcare.

  • Secures domestic intellectual property and investments.

  • Ensures technology is safe and accountable.

AI for All means every Canadian gets an opportunity to use AI, build with it, and benefit from it.

New Horizons Seniors Program (NHSP)

Do you have a project that helps seniors in Kanata, Stittsville, Bells Corners, or Carp stay active, connected, and engaged in their community? I’m excited to share that NHSP applications are being accepted until July 14, 2026

New this year:

  • The maximum grant amount has been raised to $50,000 to enhance project impact and address inflation.

  • A valid Canada Revenue Agency Business number is required to apply.

  • Additional points will be awarded to applications from organizations with a mandate or mission primarily focused on seniors.

Kanata Youth Council

That's a wrap on this session of the Youth Council! I am incredibly proud of everything this remarkable group has accomplished, especially their final policy presentations. Watching these young leaders grow in confidence over the course of the program and hearing them deliver thoughtful, passionate arguments in support of their ideas was truly inspiring.

I want to thank each participant for their dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to making a difference in our community. I'm already looking forward to welcoming the next Youth Council cohort this fall—keep an eye out for applications, which will open in late summer!

I’m so happy to see the return of the Canada Strong Pass for this summer! Industry Visits and Highlights

Quantum technologies are advancing rapidly, creating new opportunities—and new challenges—for digital security. At the Nokia Innovation Campus in Kanata, leaders from government, industry, and academia came together to discuss how Canada and trusted international partners can strengthen digital infrastructure, protect critical systems, and build resilience for the future. As technology evolves, collaboration will remain essential to ensuring a secure and trusted digital future for Canadians.

Congratulations to the cadets of the 706 Snowy Owl Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron on a successful training year. It was wonderful to join the squadron for its 66th Annual Ceremonial Review and recognize the hard work, commitment, and achievements of these young leaders. Thank you to the officers, civilian instructors, volunteers, sponsors, and families whose support helps make these opportunities possible.

I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at Defence Forum 2026, where leaders from across government, industry, and the defence sector gathered to discuss Canada’s evolving security environment and the opportunities ahead for strengthening domestic capabilities. The forum provided an important opportunity to engage in conversations about innovation, procurement, and the role of Canadian businesses in supporting national defence priorities.

I had the opportunity to visit with the team at Space Canada Credibility Inc. (SCCI) and learn more about their contributions to space exploration. It was inspiring to hear about their ongoing growth and discuss the opportunities ahead for our country.

I also enjoyed meeting with the team at Genomadix to learn more about their innovative work in healthcare technology. Our community is home to many world-class innovators, and it was inspiring to see the impact Genomadix is making through Canadian innovation.

Community Events and Visits

I love this time of year when our community calendar is filled with so many wonderful events and opportunities to come together.

It has been a pleasure to participate in Kanata Race Day, the Stittsville Multicultural Festival, the Bridlewood Community Association Block Party, the Annual Mosaic Harmony Festival, the Ontario Horticultural Association District 2 Open Flower Show, and many other local celebrations.

These events don't happen without the incredible dedication of volunteers and countless people working behind the scenes. To everyone who gives their time, energy, and passion to make our community such a vibrant and welcoming place—thank you. Your efforts make all the difference.

I also had the pleasure to stop by the new Moo & Bean Cafe and meet the team behind this welcoming local business. Best of luck, I’ll be sure to return again soon!
