Newsletter - October 2024

Thanksgiving, Halloween and the changing of the leaves in between. It really feels like fall in Kanata passes by in a flash… and this October was a pretty special month – packed full of excitement. On the ministerial side, we launched the School Food Program in Manitoba, and I got to spend a lot of time in our beautiful community. I met the team on the line at Best Theratronics, visited the Kanata Food Cupboard a few times, had the honour of celebrating the opening of the new T&T Supermarket at Hazeldean Mall, stopped by the Kanata Seniors’ Centre and the list goes on. Honestly, after long days sitting in the House of Commons, I feel energized being around all of you.

Ministerial Update

The month of October has been a busy one!

In very exciting news we signed a National School Food Program Agreement with the province of Manitoba. This means more than 19,000 students will see healthy food in their schools this school year.

We also celebrated Ontario Early Childhood Educators (ECE) Appreciation Day on October 24. We are so thankful for the work that ECEs do in teaching and shaping our little ones here in Ontario and across Canada.

Looking forward to the work ahead over the next couple of months in delivering on these important programs!

Join me for Question Period

Now that the House is back in session, visitors are welcome to watch live proceedings (including Question Period) in the House of Commons from the public galleries on a first-come first-served basis. Visit my website  for details and to reserve seating.

Best Theratronics Update

You may have noticed the signs on March Road. I have to say, if you don’t know the back-story they’re probably a little alarming. After receiving many emails from concerned residents I reached out to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and shared the concerns that had been raised. They provided their report this month, and while the employees haven’t received the type of deal they are hoping for, we’ve been reassured of the safety of the facility. I’ve shared a detailed update on my website. Next time you pass by, hit your horn and support Local 1541, they could use the love.

World Ageism Awareness Day

Where would we really be without our friends? I’ll tell you; I wouldn’t be where I am today. When my friend Helen Hirsh told me about her outlook on Embracing Aging, I was amazed. It’s just so positive and inspiring. On World Ageism Awareness Day, I shared  Helen’s recent TEDxKanata talk.  I encourage you all to check it out. It also gives me confidence in the New Horizons program. Activities designed by seniors, for seniors, which is already making a difference locally as well, with 6 funded programs in Kanata-Carleton, and many more in the years to come.

Inflation Drops Again

Did you see the numbers this month? Inflation is down to 1.6%, a clear sign that the economy is moving in the right direction. With Canada also boasting the strongest economic growth in the G7, we are certainly on the right path.

Interval House

Earlier this month I was invited to speak at an event to support Interval House, in response to the recent case of Femicide in Ottawa West. This incredible organization preaches internal strength and provides a safe space for women escaping abuse. While it was certainly a difficult and emotional evening – sharing, listening and learning in a room full of women – it helped to build strength in all of us. There are so many ways to support this incredible organization, I’d urge you to visit their site to find out how you can get involved.

Kanata Food Cupboard

This month I got to participate in two great events. First, I brought my team to deliver baskets for Thanksgiving. At every door we were met with big smiles, appreciative of the generosity of our community.

The second was a little more personal. My daughter and I helped drop off bags to collect food donations in Morgan’s Grant. This was a special day for both of us, giving back and having the deep conversations that help us grow.

Kanata North Corridor Event

This event was super cool + I got to hang out with City Councilors Cathy Curry. Hosted by the Kanata North Regeneration Stewards (KN Regens) and the Rotary Club they’ve taken one of my favourite local initiatives  to a new level. They’re creating pollinator gardens and promoting biodiversity in otherwise unloved Hydro Corridors. The community gardens in the corridor are also just amazing.  I think Charles Belinguette of the Rotary Club said it best: “This project is about more than just planting flowers—it’s about bringing people together to create something meaningful for our community.” Beautiful.

T&T Grand Opening

Did you see it? Have you been in? There’s a new T&T at Hazeldean Mall. While I’ve been to one of these stores, I love that this is now in our community. This chain started with a simple dream of being the leading Asian grocer in Canada. I know I walked away with a host of meal ideas (and freshly made snacks). I encourage you to check it out!

BMGCA Harvest Spooktacular

Quick question: How do ghosts wash their hair? Shamboooooooo! Ha, proof that dad jokes are even scary on Halloween. Just last weekend, my team was at the BMGCA Annual Harvest Spooktacular Food Drive for the Kanata Food Cupboard. We had the opportunity to celebrate with some freakishly fun games and terrifying treats that no one will soon forget.

Diwali at Irish Hills

Earlier this month I had the honour of attending a Diwali event at the Irish Hills Golf Club. It was such a beautiful evening, and a pleasure to spend some time with good friends. I learned a lot about the holiday and was altogether inspired by the sense of joy in the community. As I was told by many “May the brightness prevail always!”

Upcoming Events

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is coming up, and I’ll be attending a local ceremony in Kanata. If you would like to attend a ceremony I recommend checking the Legion Website, it’s a great resource to find one close to home.

Kanata Santa Clause Parade

Are you as excited as I am? After last year’s incredible return, I am really excited to see what everyone has instore for November 23rd! If you’re considering a float or want to volunteer, be sure to visit their website.
